Amethyst Specimens
(All specimens collected by Richard Jacquot unless otherwise noted)
Amethyst is a silicon dioxide mineral (SiO2). It derives its intense color from impurities in the clear quartz, manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and natural radiation from surrounding rocks, all can play a part in creating the purple color. At Diamond Hill the amethyst can be found in all shades of purple. Some of the crystals found will lose some of their purple color with prolonged exposure to sunlight, while others remain stable. The best bet for displaying any of the amethyst from this site would be out of direct sunlight. The crystals have been found in collapsed pockets, in situ in veins and in clay pockets. I have found them in clusters pointing in every direction.
